A new survey conducted by the Institute of Landscape Architects found that landscape contractors are often overlooked in the profession.
The survey, which is based on a survey of 5,000 landscape contractors across the country, found that while they made up a whopping 37% of all contractors, only 15% of them are hired by landscape owners.
“Landscape contractors are in the majority of all jobs, but they’re not the majority,” said Michael J. Fischbach, the Institute’s vice president of research.
“The majority of the landscape professionals I know who work in the landscaping industry are in private practice, so the vast majority of landscape professionals are in small firms.
And that’s the real problem.””
I don’t think the landscape profession can afford to be ignored anymore,” Fischberg added.
“I think landscape contractors have to become the profession of choice for landscape owners.”
A survey conducted in January by the National Association of Landscaping Contractors found that 75% of respondents were willing to pay higher salaries to hire a landscape contractor.
However, that survey also found that 73% of contractors felt that they were not compensated enough.
And while the survey found that the majority felt that their business was viable, there was also a large gap between the quality of the job and the value it brought to the landscape.
“There are a lot of very good jobs that are not being filled because landscape contractors aren’t getting paid,” said Fischbeck.
“And when you have a shortage of good jobs, the value of that job goes down.”
Fischbeck said that it is a problem that has existed for years.
He cited a study from the American Association of University Professors which found that landscapers make up a small percentage of the workforce of the profession, but have a substantial impact on the landscape landscape.
The study found that more than 60% of landscapers surveyed felt that the landscapers’ ability to perform the job was less than the value they bring to the land.
And even if they did manage to perform that job, Fischb said, the amount of time they spend performing the job is not the same as the amount that they would save by working with a landscape designer.
“That is the issue,” he said.
“If the landscape is going to get a better job, you need to pay them more.
And you can’t just give them less, you have to pay the money.
And the landscape needs to make sure they get paid.”
And while many landscape contractors claim that they don’t need a career in landscape, they are often paid very little for their work.
“We’re seeing a lot more landscape contractors coming out of private practice than we are seeing landscape professionals coming out from commercial practice,” said Paul N. Fink, the associate vice president for research and analysis at the Institute.
“So it’s not uncommon for landscape contractors to be paying a lot less than commercial landscape contractors.”
The Institute found that there is a wide range of pay rates for landscape work.
About half of landscape contractors make between $18,000 and $28,000 a year, while about 25% of landscape architects make between about $40,000 to $50,000.
Fichb said that landscape architects should expect to be paid more than landscape contractors.
“You can make a lot if you’re a landscape architect, and it’s really important to make a good living,” Fink said.
But landscape architects also need to be prepared for the work they are doing.
“It’s important to have a good resume,” he added.
“I’ve had to look for landscape architects that have gone on to other career paths, or I’ve had clients who have said, ‘I have no desire to work with you.'”
A landscape architect who wants to work in landscape should first look into the job description of the company that hired them.
Then, they can look for an apprentice to work for them.
“Most landscape architects I know don’t really want to be an apprentice, they want to go to a firm where they can be an experienced landscape architect,” Fichs said.
“The landscape architect needs to know how to get paid.
They need to know the value that they bring.”
Fischbebers said that the landscape designer should be prepared to spend hours a day on their work, even if that takes them away from their family.
“And when they are on a daily basis, they need to take care of themselves,” he continued.
“They need to get out and be productive.”
“You need to do your best to be a professional and an effective landscape architect.”
The institute surveyed landscape contractors in May 2017 and found that only 3.6% of surveyed landscape architects said that they have made the transition to being a professional landscape architect.
But the survey also showed that many landscape architects still have significant work to do before they can get a full-time career in the landscape industry.
